Social media as news novelty is a disastrous relic that needs to end
By Seamus Byrne in Media News on Monday, 01st June 2020 at 11:10amWe’re in the thick of quite the horror show when it comes to chaos, conspiracies and disinformation on social media. Add the loudest voices in the world doing more to fuel the problem than calm it and it’s hard to know how any of this ends.

Right alongside this is, of course, the local fight to force social media and search to pay for access to news media. That’s its own debate, but there’s no question that social media is front and centre in how the world is being shaped and represented in the media ecosystem today.
What blows my mind is that Australian media still treats social media formats as something to be mocked, feared or shrugged at. It’s OK for media professionals to giggle and say they “don’t get it”. TikTok is stil...

The Indian Army’s “Operation Mahadev” brought down Suleiman Shah — the alleged lead shooter of the April 22 Pahalgam massacre — in a high-altitude encounter in the Dachigam forests near Srinagar.
Hot Off the Press
According to Bharti Jain of The Times of India, Shah was a former Pakistani Special Forces commando turned Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, and had been tracked for months since the killing of 26 civilians, 25 of whom were tourists. His accomplices — also Pakistani nationals — were eliminated in the same joint operation conducted by the Army, CRPF and Jammu & Kashmir Police.
Peerzada Ashiq reporting for The Hindu noted that a U.S.-made carbine, an AK-47 and 17 rifle grenades were recovered at the site. Army officials described the men as “hardcore terrorists” and indicated that the operation was far from routine, given the intelligence and terrain complexity of the Lidwa
The Real cost of unveiling truth: The hidden toll on investigative journalists
By Neeraja Gopalakrishnan in Media News on Tuesday, 29th July 2025 at 1:40pm
Investigative journalists are often on the frontlines of exposing uncomfortable truths — corruption, exploitation, systemic failure — but increasingly, they do so without institutional backing. As legal risks rise, funding dries up, and safety nets vanish, the weight of truth-telling has begun to rest heavily on individual reporters, many operating alone and unprotected.
Nitin Sethi, founding editor of The Reporter’s Collective, speaks candidly about the sustained challenges faced by investigative journalists in India. “I have been asked not to work on some stories as some of the news organisations I previously worked for were worried about the legal consequences,” he says.
Over his 25-year career, Sethi says he has received numerous legal notices and threats, though many have remained at the level of intimidation. The more significant concern, he notes, is the steady erosion of institutional support.
According to him, this climate is pushing capable journalists away
Busy events period for nextmedia
By Will McLennan in Media News on Tuesday, 29th July 2025 at 11:45am
There will be no let up in nextmedia’s events calendar in the second half of the year, according to the company’s B2B Publishing Director, Velvet-Belle Templeman.
Templeman told Influencing, “We had the hugest first half of the year known to mankind. We had up to 24 events across our three brands, and eight reports we released.
“We've been super busy and have much more planned for the next half.”
The company is gearing up to host three major events -the first is techpartner.news’ Pipeline event, slated for next month. The iTnews/techpartner.news Benchmark Security Awards and Fast50 will both take place in November.
The latter of these has been adjusted, according to Templeman, to shine a light “on the growth of bigger channel players as well”.
“Previously, Fast50 has focused on the fastest-growing companies in terms of revenue. You see companies with some incredible revenue growth. But we also noticed that it mostly puts those smaller tech players in the
THE BRIEF: Tensions rise, truth warps, Carr drives in to the picture
By Matt Buchanan in Media News on Tuesday, 29th July 2025 at 7:28am
Gaza remains the only story in town today, with the nation’s media experiencing a hard split between focusing its sights on Israel envoy Amir Maron’s denial of ‘starvation in Gaza’, and attacking the intensifying anti-Israel protests in Melbourne. This split is otherwise known as Everyone else v Murdoch. Also getting attention: Bob Carr’s sudden look-at-me-over-here re-entry into the public debate, and NSW Premier Chris Minns' refusal to grant permission for the Palestinian Action Group’s ‘March for Humanity’ to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, August 3, a refusal which looks likely to be defied if negotiations with the NSW Government and Police break down.
The AFR’s Andrew Tillett leads with ‘Israeli envoy denies starvation in Gaza’, a follow-up to yesterday’s grim reporting on Gazan suffering, Prime Minister Albanese’s suggestion that Israel may have breached international law, and global anxiety over food distribution in the enclave
