Front Page to Obscurity: The "unintended" consequence of Google's 2024 core update on news media

By Staff Writer in Media News on
In a bid to combat misinformation, Google's 2024 algorithm update has redefined the digital playground, notably impacting independent news sites and PR platforms. This latest core update, designed to root out AI-generated content, has inadvertently sidelined many legitimate publishers, triggering a drop in their search visibility and sparking widespread industry debate. The March 2024 update, according to Google, is part of its ongoing efforts to ensure content authenticity, and was aimed at enhancing the user's search experience by filtering out potential scams and false information. While the intent was to safeguard the quality of information, the execution has not been without its casualties.  Key players in the publishing arena, including renowned names like BBC News and the Evening Standard, have seen significant declines in their visibility indices—BBC News alone experienced a 37% drop, as detailed by Sistrix, an SEO toolbox analytics software. The impact has been broad

In November, he announced a break, stating, 'Navigating long-term mental health challenges can be a demanding journey, and recently, it has taken a toll on my well-being. As the host of the 'Mental Health Matters' podcast, I recognise the importance of prioritising my own mental health. Therefore, I want to inform you that I’m taking an extended break from the Triple M Breakfast Show to focus on regaining control of my well-being. I'll be back soon,' he added. Triple M expressed their admiration and support for Strawny's decisi

Sim.ai: The Google storm has just begun

By Phil Sim in Media News on
The devastating impact that Google has had on independent publishers and creators is no secret. The community of independent creators have posted dozens of YouTube videos, blogs, and the like decrying the fact that their search traffic has been decimated after the most recent search updates. We learned this week that it will only get worse. Much worse. Learned is probably not the right word—we knew this was coming. AI-enhanced search was announced this time last year at Google I/O 2023 and I wrote a column on the topic back then; arguing how “AI Overviews” as Google describes them, could only lead to dramatically less traffic flowing through to sites.
